Planets... in... SPACEEEEEEE!

Purpose of this 3D Render was to play around with certain styles and types of lighting and the biggest part, texture mapping.

Doesn't look to special, and personally, there is a lot of stuff I'd like to fix up and tweak to make it look more stylized.

But anyway! Here it is.

And this is the final render

You can go thank it if you like... It's about a bajillion fucking miles up. :]

Hope you's like and such.

Go down for more too if you've never been here before.

Glass Knife Final Renders

03:48 Jul 25 2009
Times Read: 746

Alrighty.

So these are the final renders of the knife I've been working on in 3D Studio Max.

Just some slight updates on the renders below, added the belt clip, and rivet details.

Model Technique

- Low Polygon modeling with a mesh-smooth modifier.

(manipulated vertices, and polygon faces only)

Rendering

- Mental Ray Render

- Final Gather

- Depth of Field effect on camera

- Indirect Illumination

This is the wireframe view of the object in it's low polygon state.

This is how it looks when I model it.

low poly state

This is the wireframe view of the object in high polygon state.

If I was on a polygon budget... I'd be screwed. ;D

But thankfully, this is for realism, so I have no budget.

high poly state

And these, are the final render.

First one is the knife partially closed.

The second is it entirely open.

partial close final

full open

Hope you's like.

That's it for the knifey knife. Moving onto something else now.

Lemme know what ya's think and such. :]

Caustics test - rev1

03:22 Jul 24 2009
Times Read: 797

I use to do alot of 3D modeling back in the day, but I was always more attracted to the texturing and lighting side of things.

The ability to make an object look as realistic and tangible as possible.

So, naturally, when I got back into 3DSMax recently, I wanted to relearn my fundamentals that I find the most important, and that's shadows and lighting.

Sounds easy enough, no?

... no....

But anyway. When I left the 3D stuff behind, I was trying to break the ever elusive Caustic Lighting.

It's a bitch to nail perfectly.

But anyway, here's my first render after just getting back into it.

Oh! And the glass texture in 3D... Not fucking easy. gah!

caustic test

As you can see. This is a fucking horrible render.

But I figure I'll track my progress.

The shadows in the glass are grainy.

The big yellow hot spot in the image, yeah... that's a cluster fuck of photon emissions trying to emulate real world caustics.

To say the least, it needs some... fine tuning. :]

So does the glass texture too. Tho I think I'm progressing really well with that.

Just needs some of the reflection/refraction properties tweaked a little.

OH! Edit: The shadows are way to sharp.

They need to be softened to give a real world look and tangible feel.

That is proving to be an issue at the moment too.

Mental Ray can be a pain in the arse.

But, yeah. That's about it. :]
